Tips for Parents of College-Bound Students

You're on your own (But I'm Here If You Need Me) Mentoring Your Child During the College Years

By Marjorie Savage

"The quintessential resource for every prospective and current college parent. This is a must-have reference."
- Sarah Schupp CEO, UniversityParent.com

"For nervous parents, this should be a reassuring and helpful book."
- Publishers Weekly

Parents of college students have a tough tightrope to walk: they naturally want to stay connected to their children, yet they also need to let go. What's more, kids often send mixed messages: they crave space, but they rely on their parents' advice and assistance. Not surprisingly, it's hard to know when it's appropriate to get involved in a child's life and when it's better to back off.

Today parents are more involved in their children's lives than ever before. Cell phones, e-mail, networking sites, and webcams make keeping in touch with on-the-go students easy and instantaneous. Now, completely revised and updated for today's generation, You're on your own (But I'm Here If You Need Me): Mentoring Your Child During the College Years (Fireside; May 5, 2009; $16/paper; 1-4165-9607-0) by Marjorie Savage, presents realistic advice for creating a supportive partnership during the college years.

Filled with anecdotes and advice from experienced parents and college staff, You're on your own examines real-life college and family issues such as:

  • How to cope with mood changes in the months prior to move-in day on campus
  • Why freshmen complain about the food but still gain the "freshman fifteen"
  • How to teach basic financial responsibility
  • How parents can help their children stay healthy
  • When parental intervention is critical

The book also includes a section on the opportunities and dangers of social networking sites, information about new technology on campus, new career development information, as well as quick tips for students that parents can pass on to their child. A popular resource since its initial publication in 2003, YOU'RE ON YOUR OWN is an essential tool to guiding both parents and children through this significant transition period in their lives.

Helping our kids find the right career

www.afterthetassel.com I am close with my daughter and she values my advice, but for her sake, I have to refer her to other sources for information. She wants to major in Finance because of career options but she really has a passion for writing, and I don't want to give her the wrong advice. I just think she should look for options that can involve her passions and can make her successful. I found After the Tassel in an internet search, and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to help their kids, but wants some experts to weigh in on the options. Thought this would be a good resource to share!
