When will I hear about housing?

During the first week of June, the college will mail all new first-year students a web link to a site with information on academics, student services, health requirements, business office information, housing registration, new student orientation and other areas. We have also included a section for Parents with helpful information.  Be sure to check it out! You should receive your room assignment and roommate’s email address in early August.

During their first year on campus, students live in one of the three traditional residence halls, where they have the opportunity to learn about themselves within a larger community context. Emphasis is placed on helping students learn about themselves and each other, campus resources, and how to live together responsibly in a wing or floor community. Most first year students have roommates to experience negotiating with another person about the shared living space. Students are expected to live on campus until their senior year.

What else will I need to do during the summer?

Besides class and housing registration, students make meal plan decisions, payment plan decisions, etc. The Health Center will also need documentation verifying your health insurance (the college does offer insurance) and proof of a recent physical exam and vaccinations.

When do I select classes?

Using the registration materials , first-year students will select their First Year Experience courses during the summer. During second block, first-year students meet with their faculty advisors and select their courses for the remainder of the year.

Do you have advisors? How are they assigned?

Every student has a faculty advisor (and every faculty member has advisees). This advisor is often your first or second block professor and is assigned over the summer. When declaring a major, students select a new advisor within the department of their major.

Can I contact other admitted students?

It is possible, but not easy, for CC to put admitted students in contact with each other. This is because federal law prohibits colleges from releasing the names of first-year students without their permission. (Such permission is requested in CC Bound.)

When does school start and when do residence halls open?

Fall semester starts on Monday, August 31, 2009. The residence halls will open at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 22nd, and orientation begins that day as well.

How do I get involved in a sport or activity?

There is a form online to list information about your interests. You may also write the coaches and directors.

May I bring my car? Do I need a car?

No, Colorado College does not allow first-year students to have a car on campus, and most students do not feel that they need one.

Can I get a job on or off campus?

Students receiving financial aid have priority in receiving on-campus jobs and should be in contact with the Financial Aid Office during the summer. Other students can check with the office about the possibility of on-campus employment, but will have to wait until after Block One to obtain a job. Many students take off-campus jobs. There are a number of local shops that hire CC students every year. Internships at nearby non-profits are also popular.

What kind of computer resources are available? Are students required to have their own computer?

There are computer labs in each of the main academic buildings and residence halls. Some departments, like Mathematics, have more sophisticated labs for the complex work assigned to their students. While over 200 PCs and Macs are dedicated to student use on campus, students are strongly encouraged to bring their own. Recommended computer specifications and capacities are available on line.
