The College Life Valentine
Hi Parents
Since Valentine's Day is coming up soon, I thought we might want to talk about your student's expectations on this widely marketed holiday. Even if your student is in a committed, healthy, happy relationship, Valentine's Day can be a disappointment as we have a tendency to really build up certain holidays. If your student isn't dating or has experienced a recent break-up, this day of celebrating love can be even more painful and difficult.
Here are some suggestions for helping your student sail through this holiday if they aren't where they'd like to be relationship-wise. Valentine's Day falls on a weekend this year so encourage him or her to get together with friends and go do something fun - whether it be eating at their favorite restaurant, seeing a great movie, taking in a concert, or travelling to the North Georgia mountains to hike or sightsee. Perhaps remind your student that many people aren't in relationships currently and the field is wide open for them. Some students may be concentrating on doing well at college while balancing work which leaves very little time to date. Also, dating can be very expensive, especially on special occasions like Valentine's Day. If your student hasn't made college friends yet, plan a festive family get together. Remind your student that being in a romantic relationship doesn't define them - your son or daughter is awesome in their own right, whether they are single or dating. And let them know they are loved and appreciated by many - family, friends, co-workers and others.
Happy Valentine's Day!
