Campus Public Safety

Welcome to Western Oregon University. We, the Campus Public Safety Department, are here to provide a safe and secure environment for your students to further their education.

The mission of the Campus Public Safety Department for Western Oregon University is “To engender a sense of safety and security within the University community by providing an environment in which students, faculty, staff and visitors can openly learn, teach, study, work, and live. The environment is accomplished by a professionally trained corps of officers and staff who honor the individual dignity, diversity, and civil liberties of all people”.

In order to provide the environment desired, the Campus Public Safety Department conducts daily patrol activities across the campus on a 24 hour a day, 365 days a year basis responding to all calls for service, criminal activity and assistance.

The Campus Public Safety Officers (CPSO’s) are individually assigned to the campus residence halls and offer mentoring, programs and support to the Residence Assistants and the students who reside there. We also offer various crime prevention and safety classes and demonstrations across the campus on an on-going basis.

The role within the University is for the Campus Public Safety Department to serve the campus community in its entirety. We offer services to all students, faculty, staff and visitors to our campus. The services range from assisting with a vehicle assist to investigating a major criminal action. Campus Public Safety works with the Monmouth Police Department in providing the highest quality of services.

We offer on-going training to any and all in the various areas of safety, security, vehicle use, and other areas when requested. The CPSO’s attend various events that other campus organizations schedule and provide for the safety and security of the event and the participants. We are also available to do presentations on crime prevention for classes, residence halls, staff meetings, and the like.

The Campus Public Safety Department publishes the yearly report of the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (more commonly referred to as The Clery Act) which is mandated by the Campus Awareness and Campus Security Act of 1990. The report is published yearly on campus as well as the statistics are filed with the Department of Education.

In this report the amount of reported crimes can be reviewed to insure that the campus is maintained in a safe and secure environment and that the programs and services offered to the campus community are meeting their needs and are consistent with the activity on and surrounding our campus.

More information about the Campus Public Safety Department, its programs, the emergency alert system WOUAlert, the Emergency Response Guide as well as parking services and the campus Safety Committee can be found on our web-site.

Once again welcome to WOU and we wish everyone a safe time here.
