The Office of Career Development would like to highlight the importance of lifelong career development, as well as help raise career awareness among individuals in all stages of life. Right now you have child(ren) in college and while many students start college set to pursue the careers of their dreams, others have no idea what they would like to major in or do as a career. Choosing a career is a process that students, as well as adults, need to go through, each at their own speed. The Career Development office has implemented a model entitled “iSucceed @ IU” to assist individuals through this process. These stages are as follows:

  • Explore – self-assessment of interests, values, skills, abilities, personality
  • Research – explore majors and occupations
  • Decide – combining parts 1 & 2, and doing some reality testing
  • Plan – developing action steps and timelines
  • Evaluate – continuing this life-long evaluation process, and modifying decisions

Knowing and understanding the process is an important first step toward making an informed decision about a career path, or a career change, that is appropriate for you. The college years are a time of searching, experimenting, and learning. The Office of Career Development can be of great assistance during this exploration period and we are here to assist individuals, no matter what phase of the process they may be in. We have assessment instruments and tools to help explore skills, interests, and abilities. The Career Development website allows you to utilize online tools that are available day or night, free of charge.

From this webpage, you can access the “Focus2” system, as well as the “What Can I Do With This Major” information sheets. The Focus2 system allows students to create their own personal account, perform assessment tools, explore occupations and majors; as well as keep notes and save information that they can review later. The “What Can I Do…” link provides easy to read data sheets about various occupational areas and industries typical to a particular major.

For further assistance through this decision-making process, students can make an appointment to speak with someone in the Career Development office by coming in to the Bruder Center, calling (610) 647-4400, ext. 3501 or e-mailing dmassey@immaculata.edu.
