Florida Atlantic University Parent Guide
Get Rec'd with Campus Recreation
The Department of Campus Recreation at Florida Atlantic University is continuously bustling with students that are eager to get involved. There are numerous activities and programs that bring individuals back time after time. Currently, there are over 57 hours of Group Fitness programming available to our patrons. These classes range from cycling to pilates with class levels available for the beginner to the most advanced. Tabitha Diaz, a senior Elementary Education student, expressed her love for the classes and how convenient it is to workout between her studies. In addition to Group Fitness we provide Intramural Sports, which offer 7 tournaments and leagues each semester, over 30 Club Sport Organizations, and Personal Training.
As one of the most talked about places on campus, the Recreation and Fitness Center is definitely exceeding the expectations of the student population. Courtney Weeks, a Junior Communications student, stated this by saying, "It's improved! Remembering the old gym, which was the size of a basketball court, it's huge." Opening its doors in spring 2009, the Recreation and Fitness Center has seen more than 200,000 visits from students and members utilizing the group fitness rooms, basketball courts, and 6,000 sq. ft. fitness center.
In March, 2010, the Recreation and Fitness Center will open the doors to Phase II of the project. This expansion will take patrons to new levels of fitness. When asked about her thoughts on the fitness center, Neila Burwick, a staff member of FAU, stated, the facility is "...state of the art; [there's] something for everyone."
Phase II will provide patrons with an additional multipurpose court, which will allow indoor soccer and volleyball to be played, a personal training suite, a designated stretching area and a fitness center, that will double in size. And lastly, as Eric Hawkes, Director for the Department of Campus Recreation has stated, will be "...the crown jewel of the facility - the outdoor leisure pool and lounge."
Fulfilling the mission for the Department of Campus Recreation "...to enhance the quality of life...by encouraging active and balanced lifestyles..." is what the staff continuously strives for daily. We encourage you to invite your student to visit our facility and next time you are in the area we invite you to visit our facility with them.
