Although the UVM campus is a very safe place to live, it is important for students to take an active role in protecting and taking care of themselves, their community and their property.

Here are some highlights of what is on campus to help keep students safe:

  • Automatic sprinklers
  • Blue Light emergency phones
  • Centrally monitored fire/CO alarm systems
  • Hall phone(s) on every residence hall floor
  • On- and off-campus shuttle buses
  • Policies prohibiting alcohol and illegal substances
  • Policies prohibiting covering sprinklers or heat sensors
  • Police Services and hall staff on call 24/7
  • Well-lit main pathways between buildings
  • The CatAlert system—UVM’s rapid emergency notification system. Students who sign up for CatAlert will receive a text message and email in the event of a campus emergency.

Safety checklist for students

  • Be aware of your property
  • Consider purchasing renters’ insurance
  • Give a second thought to sharing your schedules and photos on Facebook, in your AIM away messages, or on other social networking sites

  • Keep your room key and student ID separate
  • Lock your bike whenever you are not using it
  • Lock your room and carry your key with you at all times
