• Use the existing resources available for off-campus living:
• Have reliable/trustworthy friends and family help you move.
• In preparing for the move, be aware of the weather forecast and other factors that may affect your move.
• During the move, don't store items in your vehicle overnight or leave items unattended in your vehicle.
• When you have the option of choosing roommates, choose friends/family you already have relationships with and you know you can trust.
• Remember to always secure your residence when you are not home and when you are home; when you are moving, we recommend that you continue to lock doors and windows for your protection.
• Make sure safety measures are in place at your new residence: outdoor lighting, security personnel, security alarms, peep holes, dead bolt locks, trimmed hedges and foliage, etc.
• Visit and speak with your neighbors about issues at your new residence; you may also be able to determine which neighbors you can trust and depend on when you need them.
• Obtain crime statistics on your new location from the local police/sheriff's office.
• Check to see if your new residence provides residential safes, security closets, storm shelter areas and other safety precautions and use them when necessary.
• Know the law enforcement jurisdiction you are living in, i.e. City of Tuscaloosa and the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office. Post the respective numbers in your home and store them in your cell phone.
