Exciting changes are happening in the First Year Experience office...a name change to be specific! First Year Experience will change our name to New Student & Family Programs effective on April 1st.
For many years, First Year Experience focused on getting new students acquainted to campus by hosting a variety of undergraduate programs like R.O.C.K. Camp, Welcome Weeks, Help-A-Hog and more. In addition to first year programming, FYE hosted events geared towards the families of UofA students like Family Weekend, Spring Family Reunion and the Parent Partnership Association. As the years passed and the parent focused programs grew, the FYE office decided to create a sector of the department solely dedicated to this area, which is where Parent & Family Programs was born.
With the influx of the Parent & Family Programs area and additional programs like Friday Night Live and Leadership Programs finding their home in our department, the name First Year Experience no longer represents the varying populations that we work with. So on April 1, 2012, First Year Experience will transition to a new name-New Student & Family Programs. This name will not directly affect the programs in our office, but will allow us to highlight the populations that we work with as priorities at the University. It will also allow incoming parents, family members and students to find the office that serves them easier and will eliminate confusion between FYE and the first year experience courses located in the academic colleges.
Parent & Family Programs will continue to serve as the hotspot for all family related events, and will continue to fall under New Student & Family Programs. Should you have any questions or need anything throughout the transition period and beyond, call our office and we'll be more than happy to help! You just might hear a different name on the other end of the phone!
