Make a Fresh Start - Choose a Smoke-Free Life

Leaders at the University of Arkansas have instituted a landmark policy regarding the use of tobacco on this campus. As of July 1, 2008 our campus became tobacco free and last summer a bill was passed by the Arkansas State legislature and signed by Governor Mike Beebee that will make all institutions of Higher education in Arkansas tobacco free. Data obtained from the National College Health Assessment, a survey of health-related attitudes and behaviors conducted in the fall of 2008, indicate that 66% of UA students have never used tobacco and only 5% are daily smokers. If your student is among those who smoke, even if not daily, now is a great time to quit.

Greetings from the University of Arkansas! I want to take this opportunity to bring you up to date on the H1N1 virus on our campus.

Since the start of classes, the Pat Walker Health Center has reported over 200 H1N1 cases to the Centers for Disease control. From a start of only 2 cases per week to now over 100 cases per week, we can say that the H1N1 virus has arrived. Fortunately, the symptoms in most of our students are quite mild but enough to keep them out of class so that they do not put anyone in a high risk category at risk. The University of Arkansas continues to monitor the occurrence of influenza-type illness on campus in conjunction with county and state health departments as well as with the Centers for Disease Control. While the number of flu cases has increased, it is very unlikely that classes with be dismissed for any length of time.

Opportunities for Eating Well

No doubt about it, students are at Brough, the Northwest Quad or Pomfret during the busiest parts of their day. Because of the pace, some good food facts and unique tastes are missed.

BE ADVENTUROUS
There are diverse choices students can make to broaden their nutritional and taste horizons. The culinary staff is always exploring new items for students to try. That's why it's a good idea to browse every serving line before making a final decision on what to eat. In addition, most students don't know that they can eat their meals in all three locations. Any day of the week, no single location is serving exactly the same menu. Walk a few steps to eat at a different location. Mix it up!
