Since our opening in 1953, the UMC has been the gathering place of choice for CU students, faculty, staff, and campus visitors. This is the campus “living room,” the place where students spend much of their out-of-the-classroom time, and here are some ideas to make the most of it!

Best Hang Out

More than 14,000 people visit the UMC every day to grab a bite to eat, meet friends and classmates, enjoy FREE entertainment, catch some sun by the fountain, shop, study, or just hang out! Here are a few ways for your student to spend some leisure time:

  • SoundBite offers free entertainment weekly in the atrium and dining rooms.
  • UMC Art Gallery on the second floor is free and showcases national and international artists.
  • Dennis Small Cultural Center on the fourth floor provides free programs and resources that contribute to intellectual and cultural growth.
  • UMC Connection has Boulder’s only bowling alley, plus pool tables, poker tournaments, Wii, and arcade games.

Getting Involved

As part of the CU Division of Student Affairs, all UMC programs, facilities, and services support student development by providing out-of-the-classroom learning opportunities and a welcoming, community-building environment. Opportunities for student involvement include:

  • UMC Board actively governs the UMC on behalf of the CU Student Government Student Government (CUSG).
  • Cultural Events Board promotes cultural programs and opportunities for student interaction.
  • Distinguished Speakers Board presents high caliber speakers to inspire students.
  • CU GOLD focuses on leadership development, skill-building, and personal growth.

Student Groups

We house over 90 student group offices in the UMC, making this an exciting center for community interaction and involvement. Joining a student group is a great way to meet other students with similar interests, so encourage your student to attend the Student Involvement Fair in September to talk with dozens of student groups about their cultural, activist, social, and leisure interests.

Working in the UMC

The UMC is a fun place to visit and a great place to work! Students not only earn a paycheck and gain work experience, they can learn about everything from cooking to event production to graphic design! Great opportunities exist in:

  • Program Council
  • CU NightRide
  • Alferd Packer Grill and Baby Doe’s
  • Events Planning & Catering
  • UMC Art Gallery
  • Student Programs Office
  • UMC Operations
  • Marketing and Business Office
  • Connection Games Room
