Co-Curricular Activities
Student life at California State University, Chico doesn’t end in the classroom. Chico State offers 240 student clubs and organizations. By becoming involved in co-curricular activities, students can gain a sense of belonging and better enjoy a well-rounded college experience.
Clubs, Organizations, Activities
Clubs range from specific majors to religions to athletics, providing an excellent way for students to meet others with similar interests. If there isn’t a club already established that a student wishes to join, Chico State encourages students to start their own clubs. Most clubs accept students of any grade level. Sororities and fraternities provide another option for student involvement at Chico State. There are 17 sororities and 21 fraternities on campus. Social, religious, academic, and ethnic sororities and fraternities are available. Most sororities and fraternities recruit members through a process called rush, held during the first weeks of each semester.
Adventure Outings
A program of the Associated Students, AO offers recreation outings for students, including day trips and weekend getaways for backpacking, white-water rafting, and even rock climbing. And they rent equipment.
Recreational Sports
If students aren't interested in participating in sports at the collegiate level but are still interested in athletics, intramural sports provide an ideal way to get involved. Students can form teams of friends or floor mates from the residence halls to compete against other intramural teams. Some intramural sports include flag football, soccer, rugby, and ultimate Frisbee.
Community Involvement
Community service organizations at Chico State provide yet another way for students to get involved. Students can volunteer their time with a variety of groups, including Community Action Volunteers in Education (CAVE), Community Legal Information Center (CLIC), and Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE).
CAVE is the largest volunteer organization on campus and places approximately 1,600 volunteers in the community. Programs include working one-on-one with kids and the elderly. Students may also receive units of course credit for certain types of community service activities. You can also learn much about the campus by attending Parents Reception at the Getting Connected event at the beginning of each fall semester, and at Family Weekend later in the fall.
