Chico State has made a practice of providing students with educational opportunities for hands on learning of professional skills. The department of recreation and parks management field schools for spring 2011 allow students to volunteer their time and talents while developing leadership skills and confidence.

Started in 2006 by English composition faculty, Town Hall was designed make student writing more engaging and develop students' sense of civic participation. Part of Chico State's First Year Experience program, Town Hall incorporated student writing, civic engagement, and public presentation of policy ideas.
