Family Weekend Highlights
Thank You for Being Here!
The Second Annual Family Weekend was held on the Chico State campus October 10-12, 2008. This weekend was previously known as Alumni and Parent Weekend, and before that, it was Homecoming Weekend. The University now devotes this entire weekend to parents and parent-related events.
“It is really great when there is such a diverse calendar of events between campus and downtown,” says Polly Crabtree, Associate Director of Alumni and Parent Relations. “From Artoberfest to the 'Parade of Lights,' there was sure to be something going on to interest all members of the family.”
Some weekend highlights include the parent workshops held on Saturday morning, and the Family Barbecue and Picnic held on Saturday afternoon. The weather for the weekend was clear, but quite cool; sweatshirts sold in the AS Bookstore at a rapid pace. There were more than 800 parents and students in attendance at the barbecue on the Kendall lawn. University President Paul Zingg addressed the crowd during lunch and shared both accomplishments of the University and some goals for coming years.
The many campus and community events taking place during the weekend provided opportunities for students and parents alike to get more familiar with Chico and the surrounding area. The best part of the weekend, though, is the opportunity parents and students have to interact.
“Many parents commented to me,” says Crabtree, “how much change there has been in their son or daughter in the short time since the start of the semester.”
The semester started more than ten weeks ago, now, and will soon be over. There is a week long break for Thanksgiving, November 24-28 (the residence halls close on Friday, November 21 at 6:00 p.m., and reopen at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 30). It was great that so many parents could make it to Chico to see their student’s progress first-hand.
Plan on attending Family Weekend again next year, October 9-11, 2009!
