Why should Students think about doing Service Learning as part of their undergraduate education?
- There is a valuable learning opportunity that can only be experienced outside the classroom. Service Learning brings the Classroom and the world together.
- Service enhances learning and helps develop leadership.
- Making a difference through service helps students achieve their human potential.
What are Service Learning opportunities that students can take advantage of?
- Students can sign up for service learning classes offered in various disciplines.
- Students can add a 4th unit to a course they are taking with a “299” service learning intensification.
- Service opportunities can be local (Chicago area service agencies), national (e.g. Habitat for Humanity- Biloxi, MS) or international (e.g. Service in Cuernavaca, Mexico.)
How is Service Learning related to choosing a major or developing a profession?
- Practical experience through service is one of the best teachers for the responsibilities of the professional world.
- Service in the community broadens one’s knowledge of themselves and the world.
- Employers and graduate schools value students who are involved in their communities through service.
