Dominican University Parent Guide
Important Information about H1N1 Virus
Preparing for college means preparing to stay healthy, especially this year when the swine flu threatens. Staying healthy means:
- More frequent hand washing (26 seconds with soap and water) and use of hand sanitizers which are placed throughout campus and which should also be carried on your person.
- A new ‘cover your cough and sneezes' protocol: cough into your sleeve, NOT your hands.
- Getting a reasonable amount of sleep, good nutrition and regular exercise.
- Getting a seasonal flu vaccine from your doctor or the Wellness Center if you are too far to return to your own doctor.
- Staying home when you are ill* until 24 hours AFTER you are symptom and fever free without the use of fever reducing medication.
- Having a personal emergency plan: a way to return home or to a place off campus where you can be cared for if you become seriously ill.
A campus wide committee has been formed to prepare the entire Dominican community to be proactive in preventing and in planning for any major flu concern should it arise.
Parents and students will be kept notified of any developments regarding swine flu through our website: www.dom.edu.
Students are reminded to not only be mindful of their own health but of others around them who may need support or assistance. Please refer affected people to the Wellness Center in the lower level of Coughlin Hall or by calling (708) 524-6229 or email www.dom.edu/wellness.
*Flu Symptoms: fever, cough, sneezing, chills, aches, sometimes diarrhea or vomiting.
