Ways to Connect with Dominican University during Lent

Posted in

During each of the days of Lent, students, faculty, staff, alums, and Dominican Sisters have been reflecting on the daily Lectionary scriptures, making connections between the readings, the practices of Lent, and daily life. A recent reflection from a freshman student, Edgar Nieto, is included below. You can read all of the reflections and follow along with the Scriptures during the remainder of Lent by visiting the University Ministry website at: www.dom.edu/ministry.

Matthew 16:13-19
"You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God"

Faith in God, in today's Gospel, is truly present. Jesus asks his disciples, "Who do people say that the Son of Man is?" The disciples search for answers among themselves. Peter's faith and belief captures my attention the most: "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." His reply demonstrates his true faith and belief in God.
Peter has one thing that I often lack: faith and belief. This Lent, one thing that I would like to encourage us all to do is to follow Peter's example. Recently I attended Kairos 1 at Dominican University, a weekend retreat that helped me get to know myself, others around me, and most importantly, God. Kairos 1 showed me the love of those around me, and helped me strengthen my faith in God.
I grew in my faith because of this weekend retreat, but there are also simple ways we can grow in faith every day. We can say a small prayer, write a reflection like this one, attend Mass, or simply walk into the chapel for a few minutes of quiet.
Dear God, we thank you for building the church upon the rock of Peter's faith, and for protecting us from the evils of this world. Please fill our hearts with faith and lead us to love you as you love us.
