At Dominican University, the Office of Residence Life is an integral part of the educational process. The university focuses on creating and maintaining an environment on campus that fosters both the academic and personal growth of resident students. There are many opportunities for involvement and positions of leadership within the residence halls. By taking advantage of such opportunities, students have a chance to grow through the development of new friendships, and the exploration of new ideas and involvement in new activities.
There are five residence halls located on campus. Aquinas Hall is located at the Priory Campus, and is made up of primarily single rooms. Many upper-class and transfer students live at Aquinas Hall. Centennial Hall, which opened in 2004, is made up of 2 double rooms sharing a semi-private bathroom and 8 suites (a mixture of single and double rooms that share a living space and 2 bathrooms). A mixture of first year students and upper-class students live in Centennial. Coughlin Hall is a first year student residence hall made up of double rooms with community bathrooms. Power Hall, is made up of single rooms, with a few double and triple rooms on each floor. Mazzuchelli Hall is made up of all single rooms. Both Power and Mazzuchelli Halls have community bathrooms.
Additionally, each building has a few furniture free rooms available. Students who select furniture free rooms are given a 10% discount on their room charges, and are responsible for providing their own furniture. Mazzuchelli and Power Hall are made up primarily by upper-class students.
Resident Assistants (RAs) are students carefully selected for their ability to advise and aid residents in everyday situations. The RA lives with and builds relationships amongst students living in the residence halls. The RA serves as a role model, assisting every student, supporting academic achievement, and building community. The RA is responsible for developing programs for the students, maintaining safety and order in the halls, and creating a living-learning environment in the residential community.
Two more opportunities exist for undergraduate students in terms of getting involved in Residence Life. Resource Desk Attendants (RDAs) act as a security checkpoint for the residence halls at the Coughlin Commons Resource Desk (CCRD), checking the IDs of resident students and checking in his or her guests. RDAs promote community in the residence halls, hosting events specifically within the area of the CCRD through programming twice a semester.
RDAs also serve as a guide and a resource for questions about the residence halls and whom to contact for particular events or activities going on within the halls at a particular time. The Student Conduct Board (SCB) is also available to students interested in a leadership role within the student conduct process. SCB hears cases of students who have been documented for potential violations in the residence halls and the rest of the campus community.
The Residence Halls open on August 26 for incoming students, and August 27 for returning students. The residence halls close at noon on December 17 for Winter Break. Only international students, varsity athletes, and students working on campus are permitted to stay on campus during Winter Break. The Residence Halls will re-open at noon on January 8 for the spring semester. The residence halls will close for summer on May 4 at 5:00p.m. Graduating seniors and students participating in Candle and Rose are allowed to stay on campus until 5:00p.m. on May 5.
Residence Life offices are located on the lower level of Coughlin Hall, between the Wellness Center and the Office of Student Involvement. An office is also located in Aquinas Hall at the Priory Campus. The Residence Life offices are open from 9:00a.m. - 4:30p.m. Monday-Friday. Additionally, the professional staff members participate in an on-call duty rotation 365 days a year to respond to any emergency situations that may occur in the residence halls. Residence Life staff can be contacted by calling , or emailing.
