The DU Campus

Founded in 1864, the University of Denver is the oldest independent institution of higher education in the Rocky Mountain region.

U.S. News & World Report ranks the University of Denver 85th for top national universities.

The University’s first graduating class consisted of one student – John Hipp. He created his own class cheer. “Hear me roar, hear me roar. I’m the class of ‘84”. Of course, the crowd cheered, “Hipp, Hipp, Hooray!”

Denver Pioneer Athletics has won 25 NCAA National Championships, and 98 individual National Championships.

The University counts more than 114,000 alumni since the school’s founding. Of 102,000 living alumni, approximately 39,000 reside in Colorado. Approximately 2,100 live outside the United States.

University Hall, the oldest building on campus, was built over 100 years ago at exactly 5,280 feet above sea level.

Founded in 1908, the Daniels College of Business is the eighth oldest business school in the United States.

DU is committed to environmental conservation and sustainability efforts.

Twenty-eight percent of the campus’s energy is provided by wind power, the largest wind-energy purchase of any college or university in Colorado. The wind power program was initiated by students and is supported by the students through an increased activity fee.

In 2007 BusinessWeek Magazine ranked the Daniels College of Business 6th nationally and 1st regionally.

In 1941, the DU College of Law hired the first female law professor in U.S. history.

DU’s Meyer-Womble Observatory sits atop 14, 418-foot Mount Evans, which was named after the founder of the University, John Evans. This location gives it the second-highest vantage point of any telescope on Earth. The telescope’s resolution rivals that of the Hubble Space Telescope.
