The DU Career Center…Not Just For Seniors!

The DU Career Center is a resource to help your student navigate the career development process. Preparing for your student’s future career is an ongoing process, not a one time event. Your student should plan to meet with a career counselor at least once each year to keep moving toward his or her career goals.

Below is a year-by-year guideline of what students could be exploring at the Career Center:

FIRST YEAR

  • Explore majors and careers
  • Schedule an introductory appointment with a career counselor
  • Explore the career library and website: www.du.edu/career
  • Search for career-oriented part-time or summer jobs
  • Attend DU Career Fairs
  • Take career-related assessments: Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and Strong Interest Inventory
  • Conduct “Informational Interviews” with academic departments and faculty to help explore DU majors
  • Review the Career Information handouts for each DU major-available in the Career Center or on the Career Center website

SECOND YEAR

  • Select major and develop tentative career goals
  • Write a resume and have it reviewed by a career counselor
  • Explore the internship database on DU Careers Online for potential internship opportunities
  • Shadow alumni or professionals in a career interest areas
  • Attend DU Career Fairs
  • Select a major based on your interests, personalities, abilities and skills
  • Begin researching career options in the Career Links section of the website: www.du.edu/career

JUNIOR YEAR

  • Test career goals
  • Learn how to market one’s self through resumes, cover letters and interviewing skills
  • Locate internships using DU Careers Online and at the Career Center library
  • Conduct informational interviews to learn more about industries and the world of work
  • Develop a job search strategy
  • Attend DU Career Fairs
  • Continue to explore Career Center website: www.du.edu/career

SENIOR YEAR

  • Self-marketing, researching, employers and job search
  • Research graduate schools: take standardized tests, explore financial aid options
  • Schedule an appointment to resume and cover letters critiqued and finalized
  • Network and develop contacts in career field and attend DU Career Fairs
  • Attend employers’ information sessions at DU
  • Register on DU Careers Online for On-Campus Recruiting in the Fall
  • Upload and publish resume through DU Careers Online for the Resume Referral Program
  • Look at job listings on DU Careers Online
  • Use DU Careers Online, the Career Center Library and Career Links to research employers
  • Practice interviewing through a video recorded mock interview
  • Interview and send thank you notes to employers by email or snail mail
