Should I encourage my student to join a Greek society? (Fraternity or Sorority)
First - encourage your student to be involved in campus activities in some way. For some - a Greek society may be a good fit, and intramural sports may be a better fit for others. Either way - studies have consistently shown that students actively involved in campus activities are more successful students.
According to the National Panhellenic Council (NPC), Greek chapters offer personal and professional support within a smaller group of friends in a larger university environment. With this support, your student’s individual personal and leadership development is fostered through attending seminars as well as holding officer and committee positions within the chapter. Membership in a fraternity or sorority enhances academic achievement by providing several forms of support, from study resources to quiet study areas. Students are encouraged to participate in community service through philanthropic activities, setting a pattern of lifelong service to others.
Students also benefit from lifelong friendships as well as continued personal and professional support through alumnae activities and networking programs.
