Hazing Prevention Information and Website

At Florida Atlantic University we are committed to embracing an environment that is safe and free of hazing for all our students. In the state of Florida hazing is illegal. As a parent of a student(s) that attends Florida Atlantic University, you should be aware of the Student Code of Conduct, including the section regarding hazing. Hazing includes "any action or situation which recklessly or intentionally endangers the mental or physical health or safety of a student for purposes, including, but not limited to, of initiation or admission into, or affiliation with, any organization operating under the sanction of the University" (see Section 5 of the Student Conduct Code for the full definition). Florida State Law 1006.53 and Florida Atlantic University does not condone hazing among any student organization. To be clear, hazing is not tolerated in student organizations, sport clubs, athletic teams, fraternities and sororities, marching band or anywhere at FAU. If hazing is occurring, it must be reported. All reported incidents of hazing will be properly investigated. Any individual found responsible for hazing is subject to both the criminal and FAU judicial process. To report an incident of hazing, please contact the Dean of Students at (561) 297-3546.

A website devoted to Hazing Prevention will be live very soon and we will send you the link as soon as it is finished. Should you have any concerns or questions now please contact the Dean of Students or Alicia Keating, Director of Student Involvement and Leadership at (561) 297-3735.

Warning signs that your child might be a victim of hazing

While your child will go through some transitions when they first start school you know your child best. Always trust your instincts.  If your child seems to be engaging in activities to earn his/her place in the organization that are inconsistent with his or her character, they could be a victim of hazing.  Some other warning signs are listed below:

  • Not coming or calling home for days or weeks at a time that are out of the norm
  • Not being able to sit down or soreness from paddling
  • Physical exhaustion
  • Appearance of mental exhausting or withdrawal from normal lifestyle; change in personality
  • Appearance of sadness or expressions of inferiority
  • Withdrawal from normal activities or friends
  • Weight loss/Weight gain
  • Adjusting to college too quickly (sometimes having no transition issues can be an issue)
