Undergraduate Studies supervises the work of most freshman and sophomore students until they are accepted in their respective colleges. It is the mission of the Division of Undergraduate Studies to assure that each undergraduate student at Florida State University receives a strong educational foundation on which to build a successful academic program of studies. A variety of departments are a part of Undergraduate Studies including: Advising First, Athletic Academic Advising, the Center for Academic Retention & Enhancement (C.A.R.E.), Honors Programs, Freshman Interest Groups, and many others.

This is the oldest college on Florida State University’s campus which serves in its mission is to develop a deeper understanding of the humanities and the sciences that will enhance the quality of students’ lives morally, intellectually, and professionally. The College of Arts and Sciences offers an extensive array of foundation courses for pre-professional and professional programs. It is comprised of 19 departments, 17 institutes, and 10 interdisciplinary programs. The College of Arts and Sciences is comprised of a variety of departments such as: English, Humanities, History, Meteorology, and Biological Science, etc, which offer bachelors (BS and BA), Masters (MS and MA) and doctoral degrees.

The College of Business was created in 1950 with the Departments of Banking and Management. The College of Business prides itself on its mission to prepare, challenge, and inspires students to shape the future of business. It is comprised of seven departments that offer ten undergraduate degrees in Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science, as well as four Master Programs ranging from MBA, MSM, MS in MIS, MAcc. Doctoral degrees are also offered at the graduate level. Degrees include Accounting, Finance, Dedman School of Hospitality, Management, Management Information Systems, Marketing, Risk Management/Insurance, Real Estate, and Business Law.

College of Communication

The College of Communication has developed significantly since the 1950’s. When Florida State was Florida State College for Women, the College of Communication originally offered classes that encompassed rhetoric, elocution, oratory, public speaking and debate. Since 1948, the College of Communication has become highly developed and accredited with outstanding faculty and staff. The college prepares graduates to participate in and to study one of the fastest growing sectors of our economy and society by offering five Bachelor level programs, four masters programs and two doctoral programs. Majors of study in the College of Communication include: Mass Media Studies, Communication Studies, Advertising, Public Relations, and Communication Disorders.

College of Criminology & Criminal Justice

The College of Criminology and Criminal Justice is the nation’s oldest graduate program in criminology and criminal justice. It is known for its ground-breaking research, challenging academics, and inspiring intellectual community. Criminology and Criminal Justice is housed in the Hecht House which holds its’ administrative services, Student Services, faculty, a graduate room and computer lab, the Sir Leon Radzinowicz Reading and Conference Room, and the Hecht House garden. The College empowers students to explore their interests, express their ideas, and experience the pride of uncovering new knowledge. The College of Criminology and Criminal Justice offers Bachelor and Master Degree programs and just added a new program in Computer Criminology.

The College of Education is one of the oldest programs established at Florida State University and has always had a dedication to creating outstanding educators. The College of Education fosters high academic standards, promotes technological literacy, addresses issues of diversity, engages in scientific inquiry, and maintains collaborative partnerships to develop educational leaders who value life-long learning. Students work with faculty to improve primary and secondary education throughout Florida and the nation through strong academic preparation and extensive classroom experience. The College of Education offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in 40 fields of study, preparing teachers and a variety of human service practitioners for a wide range of educational careers in private and public settings.

The College of Engineering is a unique program as it has a partnership with Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University. The mission of the College of Engineering is to provide an innovative academic program of excellence at both the undergraduate and graduate levels that is judged by the highest standards in the field and recognized by national peers. The College of Engineering offers eighteen academic degree programs at the Bachelor of Science, Master, and PhD levels. Students can receive degrees in: Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Industrial Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering.

College of Information Studies

The College of Information Studies at Florida State University is one of the top-ranked programs in the nation and has held this ranking for many years. This program was formally known as School of Library Training and Service offering students a chance to either major in Library Studies or Information Studies. The College of Information Studies maintains a respect for tradition, while it continues to explore new ways to educate information professionals. Students can obtain either a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor’s of Science thru the College of Information Students. The master’s degree program in information studies is accredited by the American Library Association (ALA). Students with an Information Studies degree have entered the exciting fields of information architecture, systems analysis, web development/administration and many others.

College of Motion Picture, Television, & Recording Arts (Film School)

The School of Motion Picture, Television, and Recording Arts (Film School) offers a Bechelors of Fine Arts and a Masters of Fine Arts to students who are admitted to the program. It is one of the top film schools in the nation and was recently recognized by Directors Guild of America for its distinguished contribution to American Culture. The Film School offers more specialized programs for students who are interested in key areas of film. These programs include: BFA in Production, MFA in Production, MFA in Writing for the Stage and Screen, as well as a minor in Film Studies. From sound stages to industry standard mix theaters, the Film School makes available to students the best in production technology 24 hours a day.

College of Music

The FSU College of Music is widely recognized as a top tier university-based music program with a long tradition of excellence at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Students can receive a variety of degrees from the School of Music, ranging from Bachelors to Doctoral Degrees. Students can receive degrees in: Music, Music Composition, Music Education, Music Theory, Music Therapy, and Music Performance. The College of Music serves as headquarters to a variety of campus orchestras, bands, choral ensembles, jazz bands, and early music and baroque ensembles; 14 world music ensembles; and numerous chamber groups, as well as the Florida State Opera and the Music Theater Program. Each year the College of Music offers more than 500 concerts and productions and regularly hosts national conventions, workshops, and festivals, such as the biennial Festival of New Music.

A Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from Florida State University’s College of Nursing is a key that will open many doors for professional nurses. The College of Social Sciences houses the Askew School of Public Administration and Policy, Departments of Economics, Geography, Political Science, Sociology, and Urban & Regional Planning. The College of Social Sciences is a vibrant place with six academic departments and 17 Interdisciplinary Programs. The College serves as a host to a number of Institutes and organizations which address virtually every economic, political, and social issue that society must face in the 21st century. The curriculum offers students traditional disciplines and a wide variety of interdisciplinary opportunities in the Interdisciplinary Social Sciences Program, the International Affairs Program, and the Pepper Institute.

College of Social Work

This is the oldest accredited social work program in the state. There are presently approximately 300 undergraduates and 350 graduate students enrolled in the college and the faculty numbers 36. More than 50 students are engaged in active study for the Ph.D. in social work. The undergraduate major in social work is designed to prepare students for generalist social work practice. Generalist social workers utilize a wide range of knowledge and skills to assess and intervene with various size systems, including individuals, groups, and communities. The goal of the master’s program in social work at Florida State University is to provide quality preparation for advanced practitioners who will work with diverse client systems and problems. It is the specific mission of the FSU Doctoral Program to develop social work scholars and leaders in research and education who use systematic methods of inquiry and reasoned argument to advance knowledge.

College of Visual Arts & Dance

The College is a close-knit community of faculty, students, and professionals that functions as an arts conservatory within a major university. It is home to a unique combination of visual and performing arts studios, classrooms, performance spaces, and museums. Our distinguished faculty teaches in six academic departments and our experienced museum staffs manage two art museums. The College offers degree programs in Art, Art History, Art Education, Dance, Interior Design, and Theatre and is the preeminent arts institution in Florida.
