It's hard to believe, but move out is upon us! As we finish the academic year, we want to make sure students living on campus and their families prepare appropriately for campus move-out.

When do students need to move out?

All students must move out of their campus assignment within 24-hours of their last final or by Thursday, May 17 at 12pm; whichever comes first.

Exceptions to this timeline include:

  • Graduating seniors
  • Students officially participating in Commencement (band, volunteers, etc.)
  • Students living in summer housing for summer school or internships
  • Essential campus employees, (i.e. Patriot Leaders and conference staff)

Students seeking an exception (including those staying for reasons listed above) must apply for an extended stay. The application will be available on the Housing and Residence Life website beginning on April 23. Graduating students must move out by May 19 at 6 pm.  Students living on-campus for the summer will move to their summer space (with a few exceptions) on May 20.

How do students properly check out?

Students have two options for check out: Express Check Out and Standard Check Out. In both options, the condition of the room/unit will be evaluated by staff and charges will be assessed to residents for damages or cleanliness issues.

Express Check Out:

Students complete their check out at their designated check out location. They do not accompany the Resident Advisor for a pre check out inspection of the room/unit. Students who participate in Express Check Out waive their right to appeal charges if the room/unit/common areas are found to be damaged or not sufficiently cleaned. Express check out is available 24-hours per day.

Standard Check Out:

Students may request a standard check out from 9 am - 9 pm. The standard check out allows students to accompany the Resident Advisor during the room inspection to assess damage and cleanliness issues.

What can my student do to avoid extra charges for damages, etc?

Information about room inspections is available on the Housing and Residence Life website. The most important things students can do include:

  • Report existing facilities issues by May 1.
  • Remove all trash and personal items from the room/suite. Place the trash in the dumpsters provided.
  • Clean the room/suite, as agreed upon by roommates/suitemates. Residents with kitchens and bathrooms should be sure to clean these spaces, including appliances.
  • Defrost and clean fridges at least 24-hours before move out.
  • Park your vehicle in designated parking areas. Do not park in fire lanes, handicapped spaces, on the grass, etc.

Any other helpful hints?

  • We encourage students to complete their move out early in the morning or in the evening to avoid traffic and have greater access to moving bins.
  • Moving bins are available for check out at neighborhood desks.
