Spring is an exciting time for a family and their graduating student. Commencement may seem like the end of an era, but it is interesting to note that the word "commencement" is actually defined as a beginning. No matter where your student goes from here, Mason hopes your student stays connected to all the Alumni Association has to offer.
Q: What events are coming up that can prepare my student to become an Alumni?
A: On Monday, May 7 the Alumni Association will host their "Passport to the Future" Fair where students receive information and gifts to help them on their journey beyond Mason.
Alumni will also be out in full force at Commencement on May 19, welcoming new graduates with "Mason Alumni" pins as they line-up for Commencement along the Johnson Center Plaza.
Q: What resources can my student continue to use after he/she graduates?
A: New alumni can continue to see Career Services counselors at no charge for up to six months after graduating (after which, an hourly fee will apply). Alumni will always be welcome to attend Career Services workshops and panels.
Q: How long after my student graduates can he/she use HireMason?
A: Forever! However, make sure your student registers before graduating to ensure that it is free. If your student registers six months after graduating, a registration fee of $10 will apply.
Q: How long can my student keep his/her Mason e-mail account?
A: Your student's Mason e-mail account will stay active six months after Commencement.
Q: How can my student stay connected after graduating?
A: New graduates are often still focused on figuring out what comes next. Many students use Facebook but the Alumni Association's LinkedIn group is a good place for your student to look for informational interviews and career advice in addition to utilizing University Career Services .
In June, new alumni will start receiving The Wire, the Alumni Association's monthly newsletter, and should explore the website to learn about frequent social and networking events.
Once your student graduates, he/she automatically becomes an alumnus and lifetime member of the Alumni Association. The Association is eager to welcome our newest members, the Class of 2012, into the alumni community. Students often feel like graduation means the end, but it's really the beginning of a lifelong connection. We're just as excited about what's next as you are and hope they'll stay in touch with Mason!
