As you student leaves for college, parents must learn a new balance in their parenting. Parents need to remain involved in their student's life while they are in college. With mobile phones, text messaging, email, instant messaging, FedEx, and all the rest of technology that is available today, it's extremely easy for parents to stay in touch with their college student. But, when is it too much? Parents need to realize is that a major part of college is the student learning to deal with life issues on their own.

Yes, the day has finally arrived. The child that you have nurtured for years is about to embark on a new and exciting adventure, college. Does this mean that he/she doesn't need you anymore? How do you know if homework is being done? Are healthy meals being eaten regularly? Are curfews being adhered to? All of these questions and many more can be answered by doing one simple task, staying connected with your child!

Jackson State University prides itself on its relationship with our parents and our family friends and we want to enhance this experience and help build sustaining relationships between you, your sons and daughters, and the faculty and staff at JSU.

If you are reading this, you are full of mixed emotions ranging from-"hallelujah, we finally have the house to ourselves!' to "Is she going to be ok? to "I miss him already." This is completely normal and expected. You should be commended for providing the encouragement for your student to make the step from high school to college. This is a great gift and your support up to this point and during the next few years is priceless in your student's development.

Whether your student will move thousands of miles away or live in your basement, your role as parent will look different than it has until now. Before the change is official, make time to sit down and DTR - define the relationship.
