Kennesaw State University Parent Guide
First-Year Student Mandatory Advising and Requirements
Parents-does your student know what classes he/she is going to register for next semester? Do they have holds? Do they remember how to register? We are here to help!
Academic advisement is fully underway this semester with students getting ready to register for spring classes. All first-year students are required to meet with an advisor before registration in November. Approximately 2,800 first-year students received a hold on their account for mandatory advisement. This hold will prevent students from registering for classes until they make an appointment for a one-on-one advising session. This hold was put in place so that students will be aware of the classes he/she is eligible to register for next semester. To remove this hold, students can contact either First Year and Undeclared Advising Services (678) 797-2860 or the department of their major.
First-year students will also have mandatory advisement before they register for summer and fall semester next year as well. Please encourage your student to make an appointment with their advisor early in the semester, if they haven't done so already. It's never too early to start thinking about possible majors. Find out what interests your student and encourage them to research jobs and opportunities in that field.
Students will be registering for spring classes between November 2nd and December 7th. The Registrar's Office will be assigning specific dates and times for each student to register. To view their assigned time, students will need to access their academic transcript online through Owl Express. These assigned times will appear the last week in October.
Another first-year requirement is the Regents' Test which is given in October and November for fall semester. This is a Board of Regents requirement for all University System Schools in Georgia. This test includes a reading and writing portion and is taken in the first semester. Students can be exempt from this test based on their SAT scores from high school. This information can also be found on their academic transcript online.
Before we know it, fall semester will be coming to an end. The last day of classes for fall semester will be December 3rd and final exams will take place December 4th-10th. With the holidays quickly approaching, now is a great time to get your student motivated for spring semester and on track for their college career!
