Off-Campus Safety & Security 

Living off-campus presents new concerns about home safety.  Don’t give anyone the opportunity to make you a victim of crime.

Building Safety

Landlords have specific obligations to provide certain safety features, information and basic living needs to tenants:

  • Maintain fit and habitable premises
  • Provide smoke detectors
  • Provide locks in working order on front and rear doors
  • Provide reasonable notice to make repairs, routine maintenance, etc..except in case of emergency
  • Provide safe plumbing and electrical systems
  • Supply heat in season
  • Supply running water and reasonable amounts of hot water

 

Secure Your Home

  • Keep house doors locked, even when you are home!
  • Secure all windows.
  • Keep a light ON when you are OUT.
  • Keep radio/TV ON when you are OUT.
  • Leave porch lights ON during the night.

Stay Alert to Your Surroundings

  • Trust your instincts: if it doesn’t feel right…avoid it!
  • Report suspicious people and/or vehicles to the police.
  • Make sure your cell phone is fully charged and easily accessible.
  • Keep your car locked, with valuables out of sight.
  • Be aware of your surroundings upon entering and exiting your home and car.

Safety in Numbers

  • Always let someone know where you are going and when to expect you back.
  • Never leave a friend at a party if he/she is under the influence of drugs or alcohol or acting out of character.
