Dear P.A.L.S.,

Congratulations on surviving Move-In Weekend! You’ve waded through packing peanuts, bedding, and probably an X-Box or two; realized what a mess your child’s room at home actually was; and probably shed a bitter-sweet tear or two thinking about having finally won the war to keep it clean.

To be honest, move-in week is bitter-sweet for those of us in Enrollment Services too. Letting go isn’t easy. We have spent a year getting to know these students, and now we have begun transitioning them to their advisors, the deans, and the Student Life Office.

Where before, we were the lone point of contact for incoming students with any questions or concerns, now there are several offices and individuals serving the different needs of freshmen. This is healthy because it reflects the real world more accurately and helps students begin adjusting to a life less dependent on others and more dependent on self-discipline.

I want to assure you that we will still support your student every chance we get. Students come first at Lyon College, period. And as we support them, we will also begin referring them (and sometimes you too) to the offices they need to contact to solve problems directly. I want to encourage you to help us with this through the P.A.L.S. (Parents Association of Lyon Students) card you’ve just received.

Your P.A.LS. card has the numbers of frequently needed College offices like the Registrar and Business Office. If your student is having trouble with a term bill, give him or her the number for the Business Office. If s/he needs help with study habits or time management, you might remind him or her of the Spragins Advisor’s number.

We also want to make sure you feel at home on campus. Your P.A.L.S. card entitles you to a 10% discount on all bookstore merchandise (excluding textbooks), so come back often, take your student to lunch, and take advantage of the bookstore discount!

Finally, one of the biggest ways you can be one of Lyon’s P.A.L.S. is to refer students to us and us to students. If you know of a student who is a good fit for Lyon, let us know! You can fill out a referral form (or call or mail us).  Anytime you point us to a student, we take it very seriously; so help more people discover the top-tier education and personalized attention your student enjoys at Lyon!

In closing, thank you for the measure of trust you have placed in us. I promise your student means more to us than you know, and we will be there to support, encourage, and challenge for the next four years…and on into a fruitful, fulfilling life afterward as well.

Sincerely,

David Heringer
Vice-President for Enrollment Services
