During the new student orientation program, students will finalize their fall course schedules. On Friday, August 21 from 10:30 - 11:30am parents may meet with school and college deans to learn how students' course schedules are developed and how the school's academic advising works.

Students completed a course preference form over the summer that was used by the registrar to construct individual preliminary course schedules for the fall semester. These preliminary schedules reflect numerous factors, including students' interests, test scores, and departmental and University-wide curricular requirements.

During orientation, students meet with a school-based advisor to review their preliminary course schedules and the school's policies and procedures As a result of these advising sessions, students often change their schedule or create a new one.

Students who wish additional academic advice can get help from the three Academic and Career Advisors in Residence (ACARs). These advisors are part of the Office of Academic Enhancement and serve as resource and referral advisors. Their offices are in Hecht, Stanford, and Mahoney Residential Colleges. The ACARs know the University's academic procedures and policies and also are skilled in career planning and development. They can advise students about General Education Requirements, managing courses and/or programs in more than one UM school or college, and aligning their educational and career goals. ACARs supplement and collaborate with school-based advisors and are able to meet with students beyond the traditional 9:00AM - 5:00PM business hours. They also oversee a group of resident student mentors, known as Academic Fellows (AFs) who can assist particularly first-year students with the academic transition to college.
