New Student and Parent Orientation 2009: Discover. Connect. Achieve.

The Department of Orientation has developed an orientation program that serves as the foundation of the UM experience for undergraduates and as a resource for parents and families. The new student and parent orientation program is the beginning of a process through which the newest members of the 'Cane Family obtain the information needed to have a successful transition to the UM community.

New students will participate in a series of academic and social events that will enable them to meet other new students and discover what they can do to enhance their undergraduate experience. If you plan to accompany your student to campus in late August, you may wish to participate in our optional parent orientation program. Highlights of the program include the President's Brunch, Academic Dean's Meetings, and a variety of information sessions will be offered in an effort to make you feel more comfortable about the environment in which your student will be living and learning. You will have the opportunity to meet UM administrators, faculty, staff and current students, and to have your questions and concerns addressed in person. For most of the orientation program, parents and family members attend separate sessions from students, because the sessions are designed to meet each group's particular needs and interests.

If you haven't pre-registered for the parent orientation, on-site registration will be available at orientation check-in. You can check-in for new student and parent orientation in the University Center International Lounge (second floor) at any time on Wednesday, August 19 or Thursday, August 20 from 9am - 4pm. The first official orientation event is the Cane Kick-off which begins at 7:30pm on Thursday evening.
