The ’Cane Card is the official University of Miami ID card. Students should keep this card with them at all times. It is required for access into many University facilities and meal plan cafeterias.
The ’Cane Card can also be used as a stored-value card. More convenient than carrying cash or writing checks, the ’Cane Express account can be used in the following locations: the bookstore, all food locations, vending machines, copiers, and the Student Health Center.
There is no physical difference between the ’Cane ID card and the ’Cane Express account. It is the same card serving two functions: (1) an ID card, and (2) a stored value card. All students have a ’Cane Express account; however, they are active only when the student deposits funds into the account.
Please note that depositing funds into the ’Cane Express account is optional and the ’Cane Express account is not a bank account or a savings account. Requests for partial cash withdrawals will not be honored.
Students who wish to receive a refund for the cash value of the remaining balance on the ’Cane Express account must close out the account. Once closed, the account cannot be reopened until the beginning of the subsequent semester. Balances on ’Cane Express accounts can be viewed on myUM.
During fall orientation week, ’Cane Express account deposits will be accepted at the University’s cashier window, which is located in the lobby of the Ashe Administration Building. For your convenience, deposits may also be made 24 hours a day with a credit card on myUM. There is no fee associated with adding funds to your ’Cane Express account on myUM, so it is the preferred method for making ’Cane Express deposits.
Deposits at the cashiers can be made with cash or check only. The cashiers do not accept credit card payments of any kind. All checks should be made payable to: University of Miami ’Cane Express Account. The student’s name and ID number should be noted on the face of the check.
Note: The ’Cane Card ID is also used to activate meal plans and Dining Dollars. Purchases made using ’Cane Express account funds are separate from purchases made using Dining Dollars.
