A message from President Shalala to the families of entering UM students:

Welcome to the University of Miami family. We are sending you this handbook so you can become familiar with the services and programs we have in place to ensure that your daughter or son has a productive and enriching experience here. Keep it handy; consult it and our website often; and please call the people whose numbers are listed here if you have questions or concerns.

The University of Miami is one of the top teaching and research universities in the world. All of us – faculty and staff – are dedicated to creating an engaging and exciting learning and living environment. We want our students to leave this wonderful place prepared – intellectually and personally – to live fulfilling and consequential lives.

Every year we are excited to greet our new students, because we benefit so much from their intelligence, talents, and energy. The University is blessed with an uncommonly diverse student body, which represents all 50 states and more than 110 foreign countries. They come together to learn in a vigorous academic program, and to participate in the vast array of cultural, social, and service-learning opportunities. And all of this in the vibrant, ecologically significant, tropical setting in the most beautiful area of South Florida.

This is an important time for your family. It is an important time for us as well, and we share your hopes and dreams for the young women and men you are entrusting to us. I very much look forward to welcoming you personally during Orientation, Family Weekend, and other UM events.

And as you will learn: “It’s great to be a Miami Hurricane!”
