University of Miami Homecoming 2009
The University of Miami Homecoming boasts events designed for all UM students, faculty, staff, and alumni to unite the campus and fill each Hurricane heart with pride. Join us for a week of fun and celebration during "Homecoming 2009: Rock U Like a Hurricane" on Friday, October 30 - Saturday, November 7, 2009.
Our largest evening of events is held on Friday, November 6. The annual "Electric Avenue" Parade kicks off at 7:00 pm along Ponce de Leon Boulevard and Stanford Drive. This year's Grand Marshall is former Hurricane football player and College Football Hall of Famer Bennie Blades. The parade includes President Shalala, Sebastian the Ibis, the Band of the Hour, and more than 30 floats, organizations and performers.
Hurricane Howl, immediately after the parade, includes a pep rally, a fireworks display over Lake Osceola, the boat burning ceremony, and the annual concert. One of UM's most cherished Homecoming traditions, the boat burning ceremony involves setting a wooden boat on fire in the middle of the lake. Tradition states that if the mast breaks before the boat sinks, the ‘Canes will win their Homecoming football game.
The Hurricane Howl festivities will conclude with a live concert on the University Green, featuring world-famous reggae band, The Wailers, and Grammy nominated hip-hop artist, Common. Coupled with the concert are free inflatable games and food for everyone to enjoy.
This year's Homecoming game is against the Virginia Cavaliers on Saturday, November 7 at Land Shark Stadium. To order football tickets, please visit www.hurricanesports.com or call 305-284-CANES.
