Housing Sign-Up for 2010-2011
Do you know where your student is living next year? Don't be surprised if both you and your college student do not know the answer to that question. With the 2010-2011 academic year several months away and the fall 2009 semester just about to end, it may seem a little early to start having that discussion with your son or daughter...but it's really not!
If your child currently lives on campus, they will be receiving lots of information about housing sign-up for next year once the spring 2010 semester begins-in fact, there was an initial "look ahead" note in the fall closing newsletter...In Residence. In addition to the electronic and in-building promotional information, the Department of Residence Halls will be sending communications directly to parents via letter and postcard between late January and early March. Housing sign-up for on-campus housing residents begins immediately following spring break in late March and will conclude April 9th.
We would encourage you to have a discussion over the upcoming winter break with your child about the various on-campus & off-campus housing options for next year. It is the perfect time to talk about how their on-campus experience is going and what plans they may have already talked about with their current roommate or other friends. Some considerations when reviewing the various options:
| Living on Campus | Living Off-Campus |
| Single housing deposit of $250 | Multiple deposits for utility hook-ups, garbage removal, cable/internet connections, etc. on top of the application & credit check fees, first & last month’s rent, and a security deposit |
| Semesterly housing charges included on your University student account & all payments/financial aid directly applied | Monthly rent payments, often done in-person or by check/money order with little or no on-line payment options |
| Convenience, convenience, convenience | Potential need for transportation (car) as well as additional commuting time |
| Academic resources right where you live…high-speed internet in each student room, University inter-faced computer labs, study rooms, tutoring & career counseling, resident faculty & top-notch residence life staff | Limited access to on-site computer facilities, expensive DSL/cable based internet connections, and no academic support resources |
| Safety & security of an on-campus environment w/ automated card access to building & full-time University police along with lots of student activities and special events | Living in a potentially “non-student friendly” environment with limited on-site securit |
Should your son or daughter live off-campus right now, they could apply to move onto campus this coming spring (January 12th move-in) by completing the web-based application process in myUM, the University's information portal accessed at www.miami.edu/myum. By doing so, they could also participate in the 2010-2011 housing sign-up process. Alternatively, the Department of Residence Halls can assist them with identifying potential off-campus options as well through a range of web-based resources at www.miami.edu/housing ...click on the "off-campus housing" link.
Please contact the Department of Residence Halls office at (305) 284-4505 or via housing@miami.edu if you have questions about your son or daughter's on-campus housing options for next year or if they require assistance with seeking off-campus housing accommodations.
