University of Miami Parent Guide
Housing Check-Out Information
If your son or daughter is currently living on-campus, he or she must check out of his or her room or apartment no later than 24 hours after their last final examination. Graduating students and other students participating in commencement must check out of their rooms and apartments by 2:00pm, Saturday, May 15.
Students who have applied for Summer Session I housing by Friday, May 14 may remain in their spring housing assignment and then begin moving into their summer assignment on Monday, May 17 from 5:00-10:00pm. Moveover continues on Tuesday, May 18 from 9:00am until 3:00pm when they must be checked out of their spring housing assignment.
TRASH
Bag all trash. Plastic trash bags will be available at all reception desks. Leave all filled trash bags in your room/apartment; housekeeping will remove them after you check out. No trash should be dumped or swept into hallways or stairwells.
LOFTS AND CARPETS
Lofts rented from Bedloft.com should be left assembled in your room. Personal lofts must be dismantled and carpeting rolled. If carpeting and loft materials are not being removed from campus, they should be neatly stacked in students' rooms. Do not drop or thrown carpeting or loft materials in hallways, stairwells, trash chutes, lobbies or out windows. No lofts or carpeting may be left in a room over the summer.
FURNITURE
If your student called 8-CARE and arranged for the UM Physical Plant Department to come to his or her room or apartment and remove furniture during the year, he or she does not have to request the return of the furniture prior to checking out. You will not be billed for the furniture that was removed via a work order.
However, if your student or someone other than the UM Physical Plant Department removed furniture from your student's room or apartment, it must be returned prior to checking out. Failure to return the furniture will result in you being charged for the missing furniture.
PENALTIES AND FINES
- Failure to clean room $100
- Failure to dismantle lofts and stack neatly or roll up carpet $100
- Improper or late check-out fine $100

Students remaining for summer school who have signed up for summer housing by May 1 can remain in their spring assignments until the moveover at no additional charge. After May 1, there is an additional charge of $100.
MAIL
Students should start now to inform magazine publishers and other correspondents about his or her new address to ensure continued mail service. Forwarding address information should be provided during checkout. Only first and second class mail and parcel post will be forwarded. If your student does not provide a forwarding address on his or her express check-out envelope, his or her mail will be returned to sender. Mail cannot be held.
