Emergency Preparedness

Posted in

The University of Miami’s Disaster and Recovery Plan is comprehensive and well established; it can be viewed online. Communication between University officials and the University community is one of the most important aspects of successful emergency incident management.

As a result, the University has a comprehensive crisis communication plan in place, and can quickly disseminate urgent messages to the entire University community through a redundant multiple-communications solution known as the Emergency Notification Network, or ENN.

The ENN utilizes voice messages to cell, home and office phones, text messages to cell phones, email messages, outdoor emergency warning sirens (on the Coral Gables campus only), public address and loudspeaker messages in all residential colleges and some other buildings, person-to-person communication, and any other mediums that are deemed useful and available at the time of activation.

However, in order to receive ENN messages on one’s cell phone, home phone, and e-mail, contact information must be entered into the myUM system. Visit myUM to enter and update contact information. In addition, during a time of crisis, the University’s Rumor Control Hotline is activated:

  • (305) 284-5151. Trained staff is available to answer questions throughout the incident.  Other emergency hotlines are:
  • (305) 243-6079 for the Miller School of Medicine and South campuses,
  • (305) 421-4888 for the Rosenstiel School campus, and (800) 227-0354 for those calling from outside the South Florida area.
