The Department of Housing and Residential Life is home to an extensive and diverse residential program featuring six residential communities. The cornerstone of the residential program is a system of five residential colleges that blend the Oxford and Cambridge tradition of live-in faculty with the American commitment to student development and academic success.
Residential Colleges range in size from 400 – 950 students. The University also offers University Village, an apartment area housing approximately 800 upper-class students. We strive to fulfill our mission – Student Housing for Student Learning.
UM’s five residential living-learning areas accomplish this mission by organizing student communities that support student academics, learning, and development; offering opportunities for faculty-student interaction; providing several special-interest housing areas and First-Year Experience floors in Hecht and Stanford; creating easy access to campus services and resources; and by offering study groups, tutoring, computer labs, and exciting cultural and social activities.
Living in each of the residential colleges are two to three Resident Faculty members and their families, along with student affairs professionals, called Area Directors, who are responsible for the overall management and supervision of the college (larger colleges also have an Assistant Area Director).
In addition, each floor in the residential colleges and each building in the apartment area have one or more student staff called Resident Assistants who provide peer mentoring, cultural and social opportunities, academic assistance, and work with their residents to develop a community that enriches and supports the student learning and academic experience at the University of Miami.
