Evacuation Information

Posted in

Unfortunately, hurricanes are a part of life in South Florida. Hurricane season begins on June 1 and continues through November 30 each year. In the aftermath of a storm, when communications may be severely disrupted, emergency personnel attempt to communicate with the University community to make sure everyone is safe and to advise them of our business continuation plans.

It is important that we have the most current contact information possible. While this system was primarily designed for hurricane activations, it can be used for any emergency requiring evacuation and the need to reconnect with the campus community.

Students are encouraged to complete the Emergency/Evacuation Information through myUM to notify the University as to where they plan to stay during a storm or who will know how to reach them. This process is accomplished by going to myUM and clicking on the Personal, Address and Emergency/Evacuation Information link under the Personal & Biographical Info section on the right hand side of the page.

As storms approach, the University will send out emails to all students and conduct meetings with resident students to provide them with more specific preparedness instructions. Learn more about hurricane preparedness by visiting Emergency Preparedness.

After a storm, students should check-in and indicate their whereabouts by accessing the Recover website. Students will be able to provide contact and location information at this site which can be used in case significant recovery efforts are necessary. All students should also immediately attempt to contact family and friends by any available means (telephone, text, email, social media, etc) and let them know they are ok.
