Dear Families of Undergraduate Students:

Welcome to the University of Miami family. In an effort to make the transition to college life as meaningful and effortless as possible, we have created this family e-newsletter for you.

This first issue of The Hurricane Family Connection is designed specifically for the families of our new students. The articles in this e-newsletter, in combination with our Parent Guide that you will receive at parent orientation check-in, provide you with comprehensive information about academic programs, support services, and activities on campus. Beginning in September, the parent e-newsletter will be sent on a monthly basis to all parents of undergraduate students throughout the academic year.

We look forward to personally meeting you and your son or daughter at orientation. Should you have any remaining questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us. Call Dr. Green at 305-284-2006 or Dr. Whitely at 305-284-4922. Congratulations and welcome to the University of Miami family!

Sincerely,

Freshman Advising and Registration

During the new student orientation program, students will finalize their fall course schedules. On Friday, August 21 from 10:30 - 11:30am parents may meet with school and college deans to learn how students' course schedules are developed and how the school's academic advising works.

Students completed a course preference form over the summer that was used by the registrar to construct individual preliminary course schedules for the fall semester. These preliminary schedules reflect numerous factors, including students' interests, test scores, and departmental and University-wide curricular requirements.

Letting Go: Information on College Transition for Parents

Like most changes or transitions that produce personal growth, moving away to college may bring pressures, stresses, and challenges-for both students and their parents. During this time, some of the most important life transitions occur. For students, effective adjustment to college requires coping with feelings of loss when moving away from home and finding new friends and relationships. Effective time management and caring for oneself can also be challenging for many students. Support from parents and family is critical to a student's successful transition to college.
