In keeping with Missouri State University's statewide mission in public affairs, the university's curriculum is designed to teach students to be responsible citizens and leaders. Today (Dec. 18) the Missouri State Board of Governors recognized six students who exemplify the concept of a citizen scholar.

"It was truly a difficult task as we are proud to note that there were several outstanding nominees," said board member Cathy Smith, chair of the Board's Student Affairs Committee. "However, these six students rose to the top because of their numerous accomplishments, their school and community involvement, and their ‘above and beyond' attitude in all that they do.

"The Board is extremely proud to present this prestigious award to these fine examples of Missouri State University students. We expect to hear wonderful things about their accomplishments in the future as they take this citizen scholar and public affairs attitude with them into the world."

The Citizen Scholar Award, instituted by the Board of Governors and approved in 2007, recognizes full-time students who have made significant accomplishments while enrolled at one of the campuses at Missouri State University. The award is given to students who have contributed to the university, advanced the university's public affairs mission, and have been significantly engaged in extra-curricular accomplishments and/or in significant service activities in the community.

The 2009 recipients of the Citizen Scholar Award include:

  • Rona Babb, a senior global studies and religious studies major from Green Forest, Ark.
  • Hannah Eubanks, a junior anthropology major from Arkadelphia, Ark.
  • Matthew Evans, a junior hospitality and restaurant administration major from West Plains, Mo.
  • Andrew Keaster, a senior cell and molecular biology major from Mountain Home, Ark.
  • Kristen Sanocki, a senior political science major from Jefferson City, Mo.
