Emergency Information

Posted in

MSU is a safe campus and has a longstanding tradition of emergency preparedness.  The University’s police, safety, student life and counseling staff work with agencies throughout the community to review our emergency preparedness plans.  The Emergency Resources Web site, www.moreheadstate.edu/emergency, is designed to relay information about emergency preparedness, communication and operating plans, and other policies and procedures related to safety to MSU.

In the event of an emergency (including weather and safety alerts), Morehead State University will utilize a number of communication tools and strategies to communicate with the campus community.  Depending upon the nature of the announcement, any or all of the following methods may be used:

  • Text messaging and e-mail alert system (e2Campus); sign up is voluntary but is strongly recommended
  • Mass campus e-mail
  • Campus-wide voicemail
  • Posting on University Web site and portals
  • Radio, TV, and other media outlets, including Morehead State Public Radio
  • Campus TV override announcements
  • Digital informational system/digital signs
  • Posted printed notices in residence halls and in administrative/academic buildings

MSU Police Department
MSU has a fully accredited police department open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.  The department has a chief and 16 sworn police officers who have county-wide jurisdiction.  Dispatchers in the Communications Unit are fully trained and certified by the Kentucky Department of Criminal Justice Training.

e2Campus
Students should sign up for e2Campus at www.moreheadstate.edu/e2campus to receive alerts for weather, safety, and special events.  Alerts may be sent by e-mail and mobile phone by text message.  Some carriers may charge for text messages.

Early Intervention System
Morehead State University is committed to maximizing the success and retention of its students.  The Early Intervention System (EIS) has been created to identify those students experiencing problems at MSU.

If you have a concern that a student may be experiencing personal, social, or academic difficulties, contact EIS.  A trained faculty or staff member will contact the student in an effort to provide support and make appropriate referrals to University professional staff members or campus agencies.

Inclement Weather Plan
As the winter months generally bring unpredictable weather patterns, Morehead State University has established a policy for announcing delays and cancellations.

When the normal hours of operation are interrupted, a bulletin broadcast review message will be placed on the University’s voice messaging system, as well as the (606) 783-INFO (4636) number.  In the event of a weather emergency, an alert button will be activated on the University’s homepage at www.moreheadstate/edu.  Information also will be provided to Morehead State Public Radio (90.3 FM; 88.3 FM WOCS, Lerose/Booneville; W202BH, 88.3 FM, Inez), the University’s public radio network, and other radio and television stations in the area.
