It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the Middle Tennessee State University community.  We look forward to your student’s arrival on our campus, and will have a variety of activities planned to help ease his or her transition.

I hope that you, too, will take advantage of all that MTSU has to offer the families of our students.  As a special project of the office of New Student and Family Programs, this guide is meant to supplement your knowledge of the Murfreesboro area and help facilitate your visits to our campus. We have a host of family activities that we believe will be of interest to you, including our exciting Division 1-A sports program, musical concerts, theatrical events and world class speakers.

As we have told your students, there is no secret to student success at MTSU.  We know that students who are most successful at persisting until graduation are those who get involved with campus life, whether through athletics, band, living and working on-campus, or joining a variety of clubs and organizations.  While there is no substitute for hard work in the classroom, we know that students do best at MTSU when they balance attention to their coursework with involvement in organizations and activities.  You can help model the importance of campus involvement and encourage their participation by joining us for those activities that are of interest and fit into your calendar.  We welcome your presence on campus.

Please remember that the Division of Student Affairs, Enrollment and Academic Service exists to help support students in both their in-class and out-of-class activities. I hope that your student will connect with staff throughout the division and ask for our help if they encounter problems or roadblocks to their success. I’m excited for the arrival of our newest class of Blue Raiders, and I look forward to working with your student.  Please do not hesitate to contact me if I may be of assistance in the coming year. I may be reached in room 212 of the Keathley University Center, or by calling (615) 898-2440.

Best wishes to you and yours for a safe and productive year.

Sincerely,

Debra Sells
Vice President for Student Affairs and
Vice Provost for Enrollment and Academic Services
