From humble beginnings as “Middle Tennessee Normal School,” responsible for the education of our state’s elementary and high school teachers, Middle Tennessee State University has grown and prospered, diversifying both in its academic offerings and in its educational and service mission. Today, MTSU stands as the largest undergraduate institution in Tennessee, the institution of choice for many of our state’s top scholars.

2011 marks the University’s 100th year of service to the Middle Tennessee region. We are proud of the many years of commitment to excellence. As an academic community, we enthusiastically embrace our past. But we also celebrate our present accomplishments, and effectively plan for the future.

Even with increasing admissions requirements, the University has experienced significant student enrollment growth – approximately 24,000 students this year. During the past decade, MTSU has been the institutional leader in educating the best and brightest students in Middle Tennessee and is ranked as the number one choice of valedictorians and salutatorians. What’s our secret? MTSU is often described as a major comprehensive university that deeply cares about its students and employees. As just one example, the state-of-the-art Paul W. Martin, Sr. Honors building was built specifically to attract exceptionally talented undergraduate students to MTSU.

As you explore our university, you will find a variety of nationally recognized academic degree programs available for your consideration. We offer degree programs at the baccalaureate, master, and doctoral levels. In addition, the University offers many co-curricular programs and cultural and artistic activities for students and community members.

I encourage you to visit the campus and come see the difference MTSU can make in your life.

Sincerely,

Sidney A. McPhee
President
