Benefits of Summer Internships

Some students like to travel over the summer. Some students prefer to work. Other students enjoy doing absolutely nothing all summer. While each one has its pros and cons, the most beneficial experiences can come through internships. While an internship may not sound as exciting as some options your student may come up with, the following are a few benefits of choosing to spend the summer working:

Students might get paid
While not all internships are paid, generally the larger the company, the more likely it is that students will be paid for summer work. While a paid internship is definitely preferable, students will still get something out of an unpaid internship. Even if the internship does not pay, students will gain valuable experience.

Students get experience
An internship gives students the opportunity to get practical experience in a field. During job interviews, most employers will be more impressed to see that your student has practical experience in addition to classroom experience. If they’re lucky, they might even land an internship at a company that they would want to work for after graduation. Some companies even use internships to see if people are a good fit before hiring them on full time.

They get a break from school
Everyone needs to take a break from what they’re doing every once in awhile. While working may not sound like taking a break to a student, it can be less demanding and stressful. If the internship works out and your student enjoys the field their testing the waters in, then they can start working towards obtaining a full time job in that field.

Networking Opportunities
One thing that is often overlooked and underemphasized in college, it’s the importance of networking. An internship is a great opportunity for your student to meet new people, make new connections, and begin to show other people what they’re capable of achieving. The truth is that there are plenty of other students out there who are just as talented as your student, and will be competing for the same jobs that they’re trying to get.

Employers all depend, on some level, on the network of people and places that your student is associated with. By meeting more people, your student will increase their chances of being found by a potential employer – and therefore will expand their opportunities for finding an ideal job.
