It is anticipated that the new Student Union Building on the MTSU campus will be ready to occupy in the fall of 2012. This 197,000 square foot building will be the new “hangout spot” for students for years to come with many gathering and meeting places as well as campus dining options.
The first floor will house a food court with enough seating for over 600 people, as well as a separate casual dining restaurant that will serve over an additional 100 students. There will be a copy center that students can use for making copies of papers, notes, or research materials. The first floor will also be home to the bookstore, a game room, and a lounging area with couches and chairs for students to rest comfortably between classes.
The second floor will serve as a meeting area and conference center for small and large groups alike. There will be an 840 seat ballroom, a 95 seat movie theater, and an 84 seat parliamentary room. There will also be a collaborative computer center for students, several formal meeting rooms for student organizations, and more student lounges for students to kill time, do homework, or read a book in between classes.
The Center for Student Involvement and Leadership (CSIL), Student Government Association (SGA), and Student Programming offices will make up the third floor of the new Student Union Building. This will serve as the hub for student activities at MTSU. To keep with the trend of the previous floors, there will be student lounges on the third floor for students to relax in as well.
Both the interior and exterior of the building have been designed to create a seamless food-and-fellowship area for students, and an outside courtyard will lead into the interior food court. The space between the Student Union and new Education Building will offer students a comfortable, grassy area with sitting walls and berms, which will be ideal for movie-watching, games and other activities.
There are also plans to begin building a parking garage and a new Student Services Building, also known as the One-Stop Shop, just east of the Student Union Building. This will provide convenient parking for students and their families, and will also put the majority of student services under one roof. The structure will be two floors comprising over 48,000 square feet of space designed to serve prospective and current MTSU students.
The first floor of the building will be the MTSU welcome center for prospective students. Prospective students and their families will find a spacious lobby in which to relax, complete with a video wall and fireplace, while they await their campus tour. Tours will depart from the first floor tour room, which will provide ample meeting space for prospective students to learn about MTSU. Admissions and Records will also be located on the first floor.
The second floor of the building will be the one stop shop for current students. The University College Advising Center (UCAC) will serve as the primary point of contact to answer questions and assist current students with advising concerns as well as other University business functions. Students who need individual attention will be directed to other offices located on the second floor, which will include Scheduling, Financial Aid, the Blue ID Office, and the Business Office.
The Student Services Building will be connected to the parking garage and the Student Union by a covered sky bridge. The parking garage will accommodate approximately 490 cars on four levels. A second parking garage will be constructed to the south of the Holmes Building. The second garage will also accommodate approximately 490 cars on four levels.
