During a 2008 campaign speech in Colorado Springs, candidate Barack Obama spoke of his desire to increase the number of K-12 and college students who give back to their local communities on a regular basis. Drawing upon his experience as a community organizer in Chicago’s South Side, Obama called for “shared sacrifice” to bring our communities closer together and outlined the details of the Obama-Biden National Service Plan.
