Miami University
Welcome to Miami University & the City of Oxford!
It is a pleasure to welcome you and your sons and daughters to Miami University and the City of Oxford. Each year we look forward to the arrival of the first-year class. Students will be joining a community of upper-class peers and community members that call Oxford, Ohio, and Miami University home.
While all college towns have their own unique look and feel, we believe Oxford has a special charm. The poet Robert Frost named Miami and Oxford the most beautiful place ever.
Miami University and the City of Oxford enjoy a close relationship. We collaborate about community governance responsibility and jointly engage in neighborly outreach.
The traditions of Miami and Oxford run deep; dating back to the days when students arrived on horseback and later by train to begin their quest for an education. In 2009, Miami turned 200 years old and 2010 marked Oxford’s 200th birthday.
Our collective past is filled with historic places on and off campus as well as historic moments like hosting the 1964 Freedom Summer Civil Rights worker training, past visits of U.S. Presidents, and individuals like Robert Frost, Martin Luther King, and His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
Our present-day lives are filled with the daily joys of lunch uptown, coffee at Kofenya or Starbucks, university events, and nature walks at Hueston Woods. During your son or daughter’s time here, they will not only obtain an excellent education but will learn lessons of citizenship and collective responsibility built upon the legacy of our past.
Your student will find that soon Oxford and Miami will become their home away from home. As student-citizens of the community, they are charged with caring for and contributing to the campus and the city. We hope the ideas of scholarly excellence, citizenship and community engagement begin with the information in this booklet.
