Safety on NAU Campus
Is the campus safe?
While Flagstaff and our campus tend to be a quiet community where violent crime is a rare event, no community is completely crime-free. It is always wise to use common sense precautions regarding personal safety no matter where you live.
Encourage your student to be aware of their surroundings and to take advantage of the safety escort service provided by the NAU Police Department (NAUPD) by calling 928-523-3611. The campus has “blue phones” or emergency phones with a direct push-button line to the police dispatchers. Students can push the button on one phone, run to the next and push the button, and so on. The police will be able to trace the route and meet the student.
The Clery Act requires institutions of higher education to release to the university community and the public at large crime statistics reported to the institution. Visit NAU Police and click on the link for the 2010 Clery Report for more information. The NAU Police Department complies with all applicable federal and state reporting mandates which include forwarding crime statistics to the Uniform Crime Reporting section, Arizona Department of Public Safety as the state clearing house, and posting the daily crime log on line at NAU Police.
Are the residence halls safe?
There are multiple measures in place to create and maintain a safe environment in the residence halls. Each hall has RA staff on call every night throughout the week and 24-hours a day on weekends. They make rounds of the building and are trained to respond to emergency situations. The front desks are staffed most hours, and RA-on-call contact information is posted throughout the hall.
Students use their JacksCard to access their residence hall through all exterior doors. Students are reminded to not prop exterior doors, or to let others they don’t know “tailgate” behind them as they enter the hall. In addition, keeping their individual room doors locked while away and while sleeping will ensure another level of student safety.
NAUPD officers patrol areas around the residence halls as part of the campus patrol duties. Visit NAUPD to review a number of safety tips including residence hall safety, personal safety, identity theft and other safety tips.
