Communicating with your Student

Keeping in touch with your son or daughter is important. Many times, all it takes is one phone call or email to them while they are at school to let them know you care about how they are adjusting to college life. Listed below is a set of questions that you could ask you student as the semester unfolds:

First Month of The Semester

  • How are your classes?
  • Have you bought all of your books?
  • How is Dimensions of Learning class?
  • How are you getting along with your roommates, classmates, and friends?
  • Have you met with your resident assistant (RA)?
  • Do you have enough money?
  • Do you have a study routine?
  • How many tests/papers will you have this semester?
  • How’s the food? Are you eating enough?

Second Month of The Semester

  • What are you doing in your classes?
  • Have you met your resident director?
  • What do you do in your free time?
  • Have you joined any clubs or organizations?
  • Have you attended any programs on campus?
  • Where and when do you study?

Third Month of The Semester

  • What is your weekly routine like?
  • Have you scheduled classes to take next semester?
  • Do you know when and how to register for next semester?
  • How are you doing on your meal plan?
  • How are you getting home for Thanksgiving or Spring Break?
  • If need be, can you stay on campus during that time?
  • Are you feeling well?
  • Are you satisfied with your midterm grades?

Fourth Month of The Semester

  • How many finals do you have?
  • Are they cumulative?
  • Do you have a quiet place to study?
  • Are you taking care of your self and relaxing?
  • When is your last final exam?
  • How are you getting home?
  • Do you know when classes begin next semester?
  • Are your residence hall plans confirmed for next semester?
